Esperanza is an amazing talent. I believe her music crosses genres, cultures. I belive pretty much anyone who likes music will love her art.
I would really like to hear more instrumental work, where her playing can come out front naturally, without audio gimmickery. That said, this is a very good album. Unfortunately, I think she's a better bass player than vocalist.
She swings, and can both provide back-ground rhythm, or carry the piece. She is also a very good jazz singer, in a samba vein. Esperanza Spaulding is a great bass player.
Mostly, her singing is out front, with the bass back where you would expect it. Not Ella Fitzgerald or Nina Simone--but very nice to listen to, and very inventive with her vocals. However, if you are expecting an album highlighting her bass playing, you may be disappointed.
Only a couple of times does the bass come out front. When I jigger the bass control to artificially boost the bass, she clearly plays remarkably well.
Highly recommended.
I like this CD. Good sound and excellent acoustics makes it easy to listen to.
I don't have any problems with the product and it was delivered quickly. Thanks again.
A clear bright beacon in the jazz music scene, or any music scene for that matter. Run, walk, drive, fly to the nearest city that she is playing to hear this phenomenon in person. Esperanza Spalding in a rare package of creativity, fine vocals, skilled musician and unbelievable composer. She is even better live. I listen to this incessantly and love vocals like "I Know You Know" and "She Got to You" but also pure instrumentals. She is a legend in the making.
